Basic information

Colorado Humane Voters League (CHVL) is a Colorado network organized specifically to support animals and the people who care about them in the political arena at all levels of government. CHVL is an all-volunteer organization.

Colorado Humane Voters League is a 501(c)(4) non-profit corporation. CHVL has no membership dues and is funded strictly by private contributions. Because of our tax status, contributions to CHVL are not tax deductible.

You don't have to be old enough to vote to join CHVL, but we do ask that you support our mission by responding to our action alerts. Whether or not you are old enough to vote, you are entitled to contact the politicians who represent you in city, county, state, and federal government.

CHVL's Mission

CHVL's mission is to benefit animals by supporting and initiating humane legislation, opposing inhumane legislation, responding to proposed administrative regulations regarding animals, and supporting candidates who align with our values.
CHVL Legislation Alerts

One of CHVL's primary functions is to inform members about proposed animal-related legislation. (For state legislation, we also inform our members about petition-rights legislation, because the petition process is important to CHVL as a grassroots organization.) Although members can choose to be contacted by e-mail, fax, U.S. mail with occasional telephone alerts, or U.S. mail only, our most efficient and effective means of providing action alerts is by e-mail. Because of time constraints, for action alerts we usually contact only our e-mail members, although we do sometimes provide alerts by telephone or fax as well.

When a bill is introduced, CHVL analyzes the bill and assigns it a priority. We have different strategies for different priorities. When a high-priority bill is introduced (or at an important point) at the federal or state level of government, we send an alert to our e-mail members. We tell them whether we support or oppose the bill, give brief background information about the bill, and provide contact information for the appropriate elected representative(s). We also monitor and act on some municipal legislation and, as mentioned above, we sometimes also call or send fax alerts.

These alerts are intended to help members make informed decisions about legislation that affects animals so that they can tell their representatives how they want them to vote.
Activities

CHVL's activities and strategies include the following.
  • Track issues that affect animals
  • Mobilize our members to communicate with their elected representatives at the appropriate level of government
  • Draft legislation
  • Survey candidates at various levels of government to ascertain their attitides to and positions on animal issues
  • Apprise our members of incumbents' voting records and of survey responses from all responding candidates to help members make informed decisions when voting
  • Inform our members through newsletters and updates
  • Interact with the media
